No Grouch Slouch Hat

YARN: Berroco Vintage, worsted weight, 100g, 218 yds
: 4mm 16” circular needles (for ribbing) 4.5mm 16” circular needles set of five 4.5mm dpns (for decreasing) stitch markers darning needle
STITCHES: 2×2 rib – k2, p2 k2tog – Knit two stitches together as one pm – place marker, sm – slip marker
GAUGE: 5 sts = 1” 20 sts & 27 rows = 4” (10cm)
INSTRUCTIONS: Using 4mm needles and the long tail cast on method, cast on 80 (88) stitches.
Row 1: Join the round making sure not to twist the stitches. Place marker at the beginning of the round.
Work in 2×2 rib slipping the marker as you go until your knitting measures 2”. Switch to 4.5mm needles and continue knitting every stitch until your hat reaches 7.5” from cast on edge, slipping the marker as you go.
For extra slouch knit until the hat measures 8.5” to 9” from cast on edge.

Decrease Section (Crown Shaping)
Switch to dpns as you work the next row, placing approximately 20 sts per dpn.
Row 1: *sm, k8 (9) k2tog, place marker* repeat till end of round.
Row 2: and all even rows: knit
Row 3: *sm, k7 (8) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 5: *sm, k6 (7) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 7: *sm, k5 (6) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 9: *sm, k4 (5) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 11: *sm, k3 (4) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 13: *sm, k2 (3) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Row 15: *sm, k1 (2) k2tog* repeat to end of round.
For larger hat sizes with extra stitches, continue decreasing alternating odd and even rows until 16 sts remain.
Final Row: *remove marker, k2tog* repeat till end of the round. 8 sts remain.
Cut yarn leaving tail, using the darning needle thread tail through each stitch and snug up to close the hole.
Weave in ends. Block to desired shape and size.
