Nuno Felted Hat Workshop with Chris Hall of Cake Tin Hat
Participants will learn to measure, size and design their own hat pattern. After selecting colours and a style you will design and create your own felted hat from the finest merino wool and silk fabrics, using a wet felting resist technique and seamless construction method. By the end of the day each participant will have completed a beautiful heirloom nuno felted hat which you will fit and shape using a milliner’s wooden hat block, then style, finish and take home to dry.
Skills required: Some felting experience is required. Felting skills involve everything from delicate hand and finger dexterity to strong physical effort in the arm and shoulder area and requires and a lot of standing. Stamina is essential. Maximum 6 participants.
Materials supplied: Merino wool top, silk fibre, a selection of silk fabrics, template material, soap slurry, bubble wrap, pool noodle, and other felting tools along with milliner’s wooden hat blocks of varying sizes and shapes will be made available.
Students need to bring the following: Two old bath towels, two old hand towels, a bucket, sharp scissors, an apron or a change of top (not necessary but just in case of getting wet). You are encouraged to bring along some of your own silk fabrics or scarves (vintage or otherwise) to help you learn which fabrics will felt with wool.
